(Hong Kong, 4 September 2014) — As a unique venue that integrates art with commerce, K11 has been committed to organizing an array of art events and exhibitions to incubate young talent and students since its inception 5 years ago in 2009. Through offering a creative platform for artists, designers and creative entrepreneurs to display their works, K11 provides not only support for the new generation with artistic talents, but also opportunities for the public to simultaneous enjoy leisurely shopping and art appreciation. As this year marks its 5th anniversary, K11 will host a grand celebration event “K11 5th ARTiversary – In Art We Live” starting today until 5 October. A series of exhibitions and projects will be launched to spread the positive power of art. Always valuing the development of young artists, K11 collaborated with 11 local students from Hong Kong Baptist University, The Hong Kong Institute of Education, Hong Kong Art School and Stewards Poo Kei College in a public art project “Encounters 11”- Local Students’ Public Art Project, where their painting, graphic design works and creative art installations are displayed at 11 different corners of the mall. Joining hands with these promising young talent who manifest the 3 essential elements that distinguish the brand of K11 – “Art • People • Nature” – from a new perspective, K11 reinforces itself as a local art landmark for the new generation. Celebratory art events also include “Design Feisty거침없이 한국디자인, a multidisciplinary performance and exhibition held in Hong Kong for the first time, featuring the masterful works of 14 renowned Korean artists such as Park Zinoo and Choi Dusu. Moreover, local art groups Pengguin, Kay Kwok and Stickyline will display works specifically designed to celebrate the 5th anniversary of K11 in the “5th ARTiversary Design Special” exhibition. Also in the line-up of activities are “More Than A Toy” Worldwide Collection Exhibition”, featuring the designer toy creations by renowned designers from around the world. To further celebrate its 5th anniversary, K11 is releasing an exclusive set of 5 toy figures especially designed for this exhibition and redeemable through in-mall purchases. Other celebration activities include “Design Mart 2014@K11”, a campaign well known for its support of local creativity; “Ink Battle” and “Artist Talks”.

Committed to promoting art and design and incubating creativity in Hong Kong, K11 continuously drives the brand’s three core elements: “Art • People • Nature” positioning them as a platform for presenting art and supporting the development of contemporary Chinese art. Mr. Adrian Cheng, Founder and Chairman of K11, said, “Over the 5 years since its inception, K11 has successfully promoted art and design within the society through collaborations with nearly 400 artists and organizations from a variety of countries to hold over 70 art exhibitions and more than 40 artist talks and workshops. Exhibition attendance this year from January to July has experienced a year-on-year increase of 40%, a testament to K11’s achievement in integrating art with the daily lives of the public in Hong Kong. In our collaboration with the 11 students from local schools, we will display their art works at K11 starting from September as part of the “Encounters 11- Local Students’ Public Art Project. Running for a significant period of time, the exhibition will enable the public to appreciate art and culture expressed in different forms and to show their support for young artists."

Encounters 11- Local Students’ Public Art Project

Keen to promote local art and nurture young local artists by providing them with a creative platform to appreciate art and exhibit their works, K11 will present a long-running exhibition, “Encounters 11”, showcasing paintings and graphic design works by 11 students passionate about art from 4 institutions, namely the Academy of Visual Arts under the Hong Kong Baptist University, The Hong Kong Institute of Education, Hong Kong Art School and Stewards Pooi Kei College. Some of them are graduates who have already embarked on their art career and have exhibited their works overseas, while the others are current art students. Through employing a range of creative media, including painting, illustration and graphic design, the students explore K11’s core values “Art • People • Nature” from a new perspective. The works will be housed at different corners of K11 Art Mall for a significant period, enabling the young artists’ creativity to be exposed to the public and bridging the distance between people and art. To be a sustainable incubation force for these students with immense potentials, K11 will appoint them as K11 Art Ambassadors and provide them with opportunities to tour at K11’s Mainland art village, interact with local artists at their studios, and even create works for the K11 malls in the Mainland in the future. In addition, K11 will encourage them to participate in the K11’s art workshops and create their own unique souvenirs to be sold at K11 Design Store, where part of the proceeds will benefit an art scholarship for students, thereby offering the Ambassadors a platform to express their creativity and realize their dreams.

Design Feisty거침없이한국디자인

Jointly presented by K11 and PAICA, the multidisciplinary art exhibition “Design Feisty거침없이 한국디자인 will be held at K11 from 4 September to 12 October. The exhibition features the masterful works of 14 Korean artists, including Park Zinoo and Choi Dusu. Setting out to find the perfect integration of art and design, the group challenges the notion of design and joins hands to bring about a ground-breaking exhibition. Most of the creations, which come in a wide variety of styles, have been converted from furniture pieces or everyday items into highly creative, playful and even outlandish artworks. The unique characteristics of Korean design have received global attention particularly by its emphasis on traditional craftsmanship and innovative use of materials. With a shared objective to “integrate the innovative mind with various design styles and craftsmanship”, the Korean talents seek to achieve a perfect combination of functionality and aesthetics. The creative group Gagu-Gasu, led by Park Zinoo and musician Jeon Jihan, will also present an innovative multimedia show tonight to celebrate K11’s 5th ARTiversary. A variety of furniture art pieces will be assembled together to form a stage for singing performances, electronic music, lighting and smoke to create different visual and audio effects showcasing the merging of music and design.

“More Than A Toy” Worldwide Collection Exhibition

While toys are not only an important childhood memory to many but also a medium that ignites imagination and curiosity, designer toys in particular have become a symbol of fashion identity and an easily accessible form of art. Some of the exhibits have never been displayed before and will definitely catch the eyes of toy fans.

K11 5th Anniversary Design Special

K11 has always supported the development of local artists and provided valuable opportunities for them to express important messages through exhibitions. K11 specially invited 3 local art groups to create the “K11 5th ARTiversary Design Special” Exhibition in celebration of K11’s 5th anniversary. An independent multidisciplinary design agency co-founded by Soho So and Todd Lam, Pengguin creates distinct imagery reflecting a unique experience in K11 with their expertise in graphic design. Through displays at four exhibition windows, Pengguin aims to review from multiple angles how K11 has added new interpretations of the mall experience and new perspectives on art appreciation over the past 5 years. Kay Kwok, the first Hong Kong menswear designer who unveiled his work during London Fashion Week, presents 4 flowers – gladiolus, morning glory, hyacinth and sunflowers – and their respective flower metaphors in his special design to congratulate K11 on its 5th anniversary. Flowers not only are a gift for festive occasions but also artworks of nature, with each type of flower having its own symbolic meaning. Kwok uses flowers as a metaphor for K11’s industry leadership in bringing “Art • People • Nature” into the lives of people. Stickyline, a product design duo formed by Soilworm Lai and Mic Leong, transforms the flat surface of paper through folding and stacking to create sustainable and pragmatic container or product. This series of exhibits originated from K11 and Stickyline’s collaboration – taking K11’s 5 year anniversary as a motif to create a 3D paper installation. Displayed at the mall’s showcases on G/F, L1 and L2, the exhibition of the three groups’ creative art works constitutes a special K11 5th anniversary presentation, engaging art lovers in well wishes to K11 on its 5th anniversary.
